Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if counselling is right for me?

Counselling can help if you are struggling with anxiety, stress, low mood, grief, relationship difficulties, trauma, low self-esteem, or simply feeling overwhelmed by life’s challenges. You do not need to be in crisis to benefit from counselling. Many people find it helpful to have a safe and confidential space to talk and reflect.

What happens during the first session?

The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other and discuss what has brought you to counselling. We will talk about your hopes for therapy, answer any questions you may have, and explore how we can work together. There is no pressure to share more than you feel comfortable with.

How long does a counselling session last?

Individual counselling sessions usually last 50 minutes. For children and young people, sessions may be shorter and tailored to their needs and attention span.

How many sessions will I need?

There is no set number of sessions. Some clients find short-term counselling helpful for a specific issue, while others benefit from longer-term support. We will regularly review our work together to ensure counselling continues to meet your needs.

Is counselling confidential?

Yes. Everything discussed during counselling is confidential. There are some rare exceptions where confidentiality may need to be broken, such as concerns about serious harm to yourself or others, or where required by law. These will be explained fully at the beginning of our work together.

Do you offer online counselling?

Yes. I offer online counselling sessions, allowing you to access support from the comfort and privacy of your own home. Online counselling can be a flexible and effective alternative to face-to-face sessions.

Do you offer face-to-face counselling?

Yes. Face-to-face counselling sessions are available in a safe, comfortable and confidential setting in East Yorkshire.

Do you work with children and young people?

Yes. I work with children from the age of seven, as well as teenagers and young adults. Counselling is tailored to suit the age, needs and developmental stage of each young person.

What issues can counselling help with?

I work with a wide range of issues, including:

  • Anxiety and panic attacks
  • Stress and burnout
  • Depression and low mood
  • Bereavement and loss
  • Trauma
  • Low self-esteem and confidence
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Family issues
  • Emotional wellbeing
  • Life transitions and change

Will you give me advice?

As a Person-Centred Counsellor, my role is not to tell you what to do or make decisions for you. Instead, I provide a supportive environment where you can explore your thoughts and feelings, helping you gain clarity and confidence in making your own choices.

How much do sessions cost?

Please contact me for current fees and availability. I will be happy to discuss the options available and answer any questions you may have.

What if I feel nervous about starting counselling?

Feeling nervous is completely normal. Many people feel anxious before their first session. My aim is to create a warm, welcoming and non-judgemental space where you can feel comfortable and supported from the very beginning.

What qualifications do you have?

I am an Accredited Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and work in accordance with their Ethical Framework, ensuring professional, safe and ethical practice.

How do I book an appointment?

You can get in touch by phone, email or via the contact form on my website. I will respond as soon as possible to discuss availability and arrange an initial appointment.

What if I need to cancel a session?

If you need to cancel or rearrange an appointment, please provide as much notice as possible. Full details of my cancellation policy will be discussed when we begin working together.
